Hello Citizens,

A resident verified in Dubai starts from scratch in Singapore. An AI agent credentialed in one economic zone can't operate in another. Every zone rebuilds the same KYC, onboarding, and payment stack from scratch. 7,000+ economic zones. Zero interoperability.

We just published the protocol that fixes this.

Introducing the Sovrn Protocol

The first open protocol for cross-zone identity, reputation, and credentials. Apache 2.0. Built on W3C VC 2.0, UCAN delegation, and ERC-8004 discovery.

What the Protocol Does

For citizens: Get verified once. Carry your identity, credentials, and reputation across every connected zone. No re-submitting documents. No starting over. One identity, portable everywhere.

For zones: Issue residency, verify identity, process payments, and recognize credentials from other zones through a shared standard. Stop rebuilding infrastructure that already exists somewhere else.

Why Open, Why Now

Three things are happening at the same time:

  1. Zones are competing harder. Itana in Lagos, Colombo Port City, Gelephu in Bhutan. Every new zone needs digital infrastructure to attract residents and capital. The ones that interoperate will win.

  2. The agentic economy needs jurisdiction-aware identity. x402 just graduated to the Linux Foundation with Google, Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe. Agents can pay for anything on the internet. They still can't apply for residency, open a business in a zone, or prove compliance to a government.

  3. Standards are forming right now. ERC-8004 went from proposal to 20K+ agents on mainnet in 18 months. The identity layer for jurisdictions will follow the same arc.

What's in the Protocol

The Sovrn Protocol defines three things:

  1. Identity schemas: How a citizen or agent identity is structured, issued, and verified across zones.

  2. Credential portability: How a KYC verification, a business license, or an agent permission moves from one jurisdiction to another without the receiving zone trusting the sending one.

  3. Reputation records: Time-bound, verifiable attestations that travel with the identity. Not a score. A provable record.

What We've Built On Top of It

The protocol is the substrate. The products are what people use:

  • Sovrn AI at ai.sovrn.place covering 15+ jurisdictions

  • Sovrn Platform in private beta: marketplace, admin dashboards, identity, payments, capital infrastructure

  • Smart City Atlas: proprietary intelligence on 450+ cities across 12+ data points

What's Next

Agent identity and reputation infrastructure is in active development. Extending the protocol to autonomous agents operating across jurisdictions with verifiable credentials and delegated authority.

The protocol is open. The coordination layer is what we're building. The zones are already signing on.

Onward,
Aashraya
